About Talio
Speaking practice built as a research instrument
Talio is a data and analytics surface for language conversation, in use in language courses at two R1 universities.
Talio = talk + 流 (liú). Speak fluently.
What Talio records
Every learner turn is recorded and transcribed by independent speech recognizers, with word-level timing and pronunciation scores aligned to the same audio.
The tutor's speech is analyzed alongside the learner's, so input and uptake are measured rather than inferred.
The instructional settings in force for each conversation are stored with its outcomes, so progress is comparable within a learner over time.
How Talio measures
Fluency and vocabulary measures follow the applied-linguistics literature: mean length of run, speaking rate, and MTLD. Every conversation is graded against CEFR-style can-do statements.
The goal is to be understood, not to sound native. Talio publishes its methodology and its sources, and does not report scores it cannot support.

About me
I'm Matt. I built Talio because I wanted better speaking practice and a way to track my progress in conversation.
My background spans data science, natural language processing, and language learning, and all of it went into Talio.
What learners say
“In twenty years as a student of Mandarin, I've often struggled to keep advancing. Talio adapts to meet you where you are and pushes you to improve — useful for beginners, intermediate, and advanced learners alike.”
“Speaking ability is really about getting outside your comfort zone. If you can expand that comfort zone through AI practice, real-life conversations become much easier.”
